1988: A Trip to France with Adam

Once again I had to go to Germany to resolve a difficult work problem, but I had received a coupon from Northwest Airlines that made it inexpensive for me to take a companion. Great! I wouldn't be spending the week alone as I usually did on these trips. I suggested to Lois that we could visit Paris for a few days after my work, but Lois was teaching and couldn't get time off. My oldest son, Richard (18), was away at college, and my younger son, Adam (15), was reluctant to leave high school for a whole week. It was Lois who finally convinced Adam that a trip to Europe would itself be good education. It would be a chance for him to practice speaking French, which he had been studying for three years in High School. Besides, she told us, this was a great opportunity for us to spend some time together, as father and son.

We flew to Frankfurt and rented a car to drive to Stuttgart. It was a pleasant drive, but after an overnight flight, I was getting a bit droopy eyed, so we stopped in Heidelberg for lunch and a quick tour of this ancient university town. I also got in a short nap while Adam prowled around some shops.

In Stuttgart, we stayed in a downtown hotel. This location gave Adam something to do during the day while I was attending business meetings. The center of life in Stuttgart is the Königstraße, a wonderful pedestrian mall with lots of small shops, museums, and even a castle. One evening we attended a Charlie Rich concert in the nearby concert hall, though neither of us much liked his music. Six pianos playing random melodies in tandem was hard to appreciate.

After my last day of business meetings, we drove to Paris, arriving at about 10:30 in the evening. I hadn't bothered to make any hotel reservations, preferring an element of serendipity when traveling, but I did have a travel guide that listed inexpensive tourist hotels. It took several tries before we found one on the Boulevard Montmartre with an available room. Adam thought it was funny that we had a room above a porn shop, but it was comfortable. I parked the car in a garage, intending to use taxis to get around the city, not knowing about Paris' convenient subway system.

The morning of our first day in Paris, we took a bus tour to get an understanding of the general layout of the city. That afternoon, we visited the Louvre, wandering from room to room, admiring its masterpieces. We especially enjoyed seeing the huge paintings in a gallery that depicted the life of Marie de Medici.

From the Louvre, we walked onto the Isle de la Cité and ate supper in a typical café. Our goal for the evening was to visit the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. As we approached it's ornately decorated front portal, Adam pointed to a sign above a small door on the left that simply said, "Stairs to South Bell Tower." He immediately headed for it and started up a flight of stairs. I followed him, not knowing how many hundreds of stairs were ahead of us. The climb took us past gargoyles and gave us a fabulous view of the cathedral's famous flying buttresses. At the top, there was a spectacular view of the city: Sacre Coeur on top of Montmartre: the dome of Les Invalides, and of course, the Eiffel tower. Whenever I now see a picture of Notre Dame, I look to the South bell tower and remember our climb to its summit, glad that Adam had led the way.

We began the next day with a visit to the Eiffel tour. Adam called Lois from a phone at the top of the tower. He wanted to tell her all about our trip, but we soon ran out of coins for the phone. This was followed by a visit to Les Invalides, which is nearby, to see the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte.

We then decided to visit the Rodin Museum. To get there, we took a taxi driven by a middle-age woman. My ability to speak French was essentially nonexistent. I knew a lot of French words, my parents spoke French and I had studied it for four years in High School and College, but I no longer remembered even the basics of French grammar. Still, I didn't have any trouble telling the driver where we wanted to go. Going beyond that, however, got me into trouble.

"Je t'aime le sculptures de Rodin," I said to the driver.

"Pardon monsieur !" the driver exclaimed.

Adam just laughed. "Dad, don't you know you just told the driver that you love her? You should have said: J'aime le sculptures de Rodin."

The driver caught on that I was just a bumbler with her language, and she began laughing. I was a little embarrassed, but at least I had tried. After that, Adam did all of our French speaking. His French education was a lot more recent than mine. Years later, he spent a semester at the University of Besançan, but I would not be able to resume my own studies until retirement.

Our final morning in France was spent on an excursion to Versailles, touring the palace and gardens and learning a bit about the Sun King and his court. This was followed by a drive back to the Frankfurt airport for the trip home.

Our trip to France had been a great success. Northwest Airlines had upgraded Adam to business class so we could be seated together. My business problems hadn't been resolved, but I had come to better appreciate a terrific son, and that was much more important to me.
